Young Carers Awareness Day 2020

Young Carers Awareness Day 2020

Young Carers Awareness Day raises awareness of the challenges faced by young carers and campaigns for greater support for them. It’s an annual event, led by Carers Trust, and this year it took place on 30 January 2020.

Every day across the UK thousands of young people help to look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.
Recent research shows that one in five secondary school children may be a young carer. For many, their caring journey begins at a much younger age. Caring for someone can be very isolating, worrying and stressful. For young carers, this can negatively impact on their experiences and outcomes in education, having a lasting effect on their life chances.

In October 2017 at Catholic Care we launched our Young Carers Project offering support to Young Carers aged 5-18 across the Diocese of Leeds. Since this first meeting at St Wilfrid’s High School Featherstone the project has gone from strength to strength. We currently support 55 young people and their families. We offer a calendar of group trips which range from ten pin bowling to trips to the theatre to circus skills workshops! Last year we had our first residential trip, one young person said’ it was the best two days ever!’ We also offer one to one mentoring, small support groups and support for the wider family.

For the 2nd year we are looking for people who would like to run the Leeds 10k for our Young Carers Project, if you would like to have fun, get fit and raise money for these great young people please get in touch on 0113 388 5400.
